The patent-pending HDUE holdown is designed to meet the increased design demands of today’s residential wood structures, including three-story homes with more windows and limited shearwall space. Offering higher load capacities than previous models, the HDUE serves as an easy one-to-one replacement for our industry-leading HDU. This holdown provides exceptional overturning resistance for shearwalls, braced wall panels and other lateral-force-resisting applications in wood construction.
Tested per ICC-ES AC155, the higher-capacity models combine fasteners in both shear and tension while reducing the number of screws required. The HDUE is fast and easy to install with Strong-Drive® SDS Heavy-Duty Connector screws (included), minimizing fastener slip and preserving the wood post’s net section better than bolts. Available in multiple sizes, the HDUE accommodates a wide range of load requirements.

- Predeflected seat reduces deflection under load
- Angled fastening in the four larger sizes engages the screws in tension for higher load capacity, reducing the number of screws required
- Angled fastening tabs in the four larger sizes help drive the fastener at a 45° angle, and offset holes on the second back plate block the fastener from being driven straight
- Overlapping back plate increases fastener strength and shear values, helping prevent post splitting
- Optimized screw patterns reduce splitting at the end of the post and maximize individual fastener capacity

- Set the correct size cast-in-place anchor bolt
- Place the HDUE holdown over the anchor bolt
- The HDUE requires no additional washer
- HDUE13 requires heavy hex nut (provided)
- Fasteners and crescent washer are included with the holdowns; to order replacements, please contact Simpson Strong-Tie
For HDUE3 and HDUE5:
- Install all Strong-Drive SDS Heavy-Duty Connector Screws (included) perpendicular into the wood member
For HDUE7, HDUE9, HDUE13, and HDUE17:
- Install at least one perpendicular Strong-Drive SDS Heavy-Duty Connector Screw (included) into the wood member to set the holdown
- Install the remaining screws, including both perpendicular and angled screws, into all holes (both round and tabbed) in the wood member
- Place and orientate the crescent washer (included) over the anchor bolt
- Anchor bolt nut should be finger tight plus 1/3 to 1/2 turn with a hand wrench
